We first heard about the idea of pull-apart sliders as a brilliant kids’ party-tray idea, which is how we came up with our pizza pull-apart sliders recipe. But there’s no reason grownups can’t be delighted by them too! So here’s a fun recipe that makes use of our recipes for carnitas and buttery pull-apart rolls.

You can still delight the crowd without making the carnitas or rolls from scratch; after all, the family from whom we learned this technique always relied on packages of Hawaiian rolls. But if you have the time and inclination, make it all from scratch.

For an added touch, you can toast the split top and bottom halves before filling the sliders. They won’t be warm by the time you get to the party, but that little extra crunch is a great texture addition. Just make sure not to cover too tightly so the rolls don’t steam themselves and get soggy when you’re transporting them.

Finally, to serve these, if you don’t have a great serving plate large enough (pro tip: party stores have inexpensive, great-looking reusable plastic trays and plates of all sizes and colors), you can line a rimmed half-sheet pan with decorative paper or even just keep the pan unadorned like fancy burger places do if it hasn’t been discolored by years of oven use.
